Wódka - wysokoprocentowy napój alkoholowy składający się z destylatu alkoholowego rozcieńczonego wodą w stosunku około 2:3 (40%). W Polsce aby móc legalnie nazywać napój alkoholowy wódką musi on zawierać minimum 37,5% alkoholu.
Piwo - najstarszy i najczęściej spożywany napój alkoholowy oraz trzeci po wodzie i herbacie najpopularniejszy napój na świecie. W znaczeniu ogólnym piwo to każdy napój otrzymany w wyniku enzymatycznej hydrolizy skrobi i białek zawartych w ziarnach zbóż i poddany fermentacji alkoholowej. W węższym znaczeniu pod pojęciem piwa rozumie się napój zawierający alkohol i dwutlenek węgla otrzymany w wyniku fermentacji alkoholowej słodu z dodatkiem wody i chmielu przy użyciu wyselekcjonowanych szczepów drożdży.
Skrobia może ulegać enzymatycznemu rozszczepieniu przez amylazę ślinową, pleśnie lub diastazy słodu (obecnie najczęściej stosowana metoda). Jednak rdzenne ludności niektórych obszarów, głównie Ameryki Południowej i Środkowej wciąż używają do tego celu śliny, często z powodu tradycji. Przykładami mogą być chicha wytwarzany z kukurydzy przez Indian z rejonu Andów i Ameryki Środkowej oraz masato (z manioku).
